Foreword
The individuals behind private businesses are the unsung heroes of the UK economy. Through the energy of their businesses they contribute hugely and positively to the development of our society.
It is said – though not often enough – that owner-managed and private businesses are special. Their uniqueness is a human one. One aspect above all gives the sector its edge, its dynamism and its tenacity: the people that own and run the enterprises. If we can understand, define and promote their character and personality then we can grow a better and more commercial business.
Yet the nature of these people is often overlooked: their independence, their entrepreneurialism and their personal involvement. And whilst these characteristics tell us exactly what is good about private businesses, they also give a clear view of where traditional advice fails to meet their needs.
Business people – I am trying not to use the word “entrepreneur” for reasons I will tell you – do not want subservient, compliant advice. They look for challenging, testing and questioning advisers who have the wit and style to recognise the important features of their management – and to promote it amongst others.
Whilst the “E” word is an important feature of success, do those who are entrepreneurs recognise themselves as such? The word is too commonly associated with the risk element of business. However, we should realise that the successful entrepreneur spends time and energy wisely in reducing or removing the risks associated with a strategy before the investment is made.
Let’s get rid of the third person – I am talking about you. If you’re reading this book you are that business person. You, unashamedly and unapologetically, want more from your business and you’re looking for ways to get it. In this book and in all our work we want you to find what you need. Life is already sufficiently complicated by hollow theories so you will not find any here, or from us.
Tenon has 1500 people, committed to helping privately owned businesses thrive. It provides a wide range of tax, corporate finance, and advisory services that are tailored to organisations’ needs, serviced from 30 offices across the UK.
This book, and the advice contained in it, forms a part of a programme of activities aimed at fast-tracking growth in the private owner-managed business.
If you are that independent and entrepreneurial personality, full of the future, we applaud you and celebrate your success.
